Joanna Sands started making large sculptural installations in abandoned buildings and squats in 1993, often using found materials, altering and referring to the spaces they inhabited. Making visually simple changes to the surface of the floor Sands produced a series of works that subtly subverted the viewer's spatial expectations.

While the earlier works were designed to be temporary and were replaced at the same site by subsequent pieces, Sands has begun to undertake commissions for permanent installations.

The research models and maquettes that are produced in the course of making the site-specific work have generated an enthusiastic response in their own right. They are smaller and more self-contained and may lead to the development of more site-independent work, though for the moment, Sands is resolutely contextual in her approach.
